What to expect

From clay to functional pottery.

All participants work with clay using different handbuilding techniques, depending on what they want to create. You'll get a short introduction to the basics, then jump straight into making. Our instructors are there throughout the session — answering questions, demonstrating steps, and helping when needed — while giving everyone space to explore and create their own piece.

Each person creates their own piece, which we glaze and fire in our kiln. Finished ceramics are ready for pickup about four weeks after your event.

Handbuilding techniques

Three ways to shape clay.

Coiling technique – building with clay ropes

Coiling

Roll clay into long ropes and build up walls layer by layer. A meditative, intuitive technique perfect for bowls and vases.

Slab building technique – rolling flat clay sheets

Slab building

Roll out flat sheets of clay and fold, cut, and join them into shapes. Great for plates, tiles, and angular forms.

Pinching technique – shaping clay by hand

Pinching

The most direct technique: pinch and squeeze a ball of clay into shape with your fingers. The fastest way to get a feel for clay.

We'll suggest the right technique based on what your group would like to create.
